As a collective, re:mark (Janette Chien x Wayne Kleppe) have been producing “Drawing Actions” since May 2012. Inspired by Dennis Oppenheim’s “Two Stage Transfer Drawing,” re:mark explores the notion of collaborative drawing through a series of actions constructed using various constraints, two artists, and an environment. The “Drawing Actions” are a conceptual investigation of the two artists’ verbal and physical communication with one another. Common characteristics emerge through these actions: dynamics of power, miscommunication, and durational performance. In some cases, the action itself is a drawing, other times the drawing is the byproduct of the action. There is often no finished product, only documentation.

As I run a marker along Eric’s s back he attempts to duplicate the movement on the wall. My activity stimulates a kinetic response from his sensory system. I am, therefore, Drawing Through Him.
— Dennis Oppenheim (1971)

Janette Chien is a New Orleans born artist, who was raised in Hong Kong. She holds an MEd from the University of Pennsylvania (‘21). She currently lives in Washington where she works as the Director of the Diversity and Equity Center at Central Washington University. Janette’s independent artistic practice explores the deconstruction of personal identities through portraiture.

Wayne Kleppe is a Philadelphia native and graduated from Temple University (‘14) with a MFA in Printmaking. Currently Wayne works as an accountant from CultureWorks of Philadelphia, a fiscal sponsor serving arts, culture, and heritage organizations in the area. Wayne’s independent practice engages with language as a means to re-contextualize history through appropriation.
